Ok, well I have to admit I have tried just about every diet in existence and the only diet that works is MATH. The only way to lose weight effectively is to do the math, and personally - I hate math, but when it comes to losing weight its a must.
Of course, little tricks always help too...but only to deter cravings and overeating. To really take the weight off - you need a calculator.
Here is the deal, I am 5'2 and 112 pounds. I want to weigh 100 pounds by May 1st (special occasion where I must blind people with my good looks).
Lets do the math on this bit:
**Today is January 31st : 28 days in February, 31 days in March, 30 days in April.....
.........................89 days to reach my goal
Now, it takes 3,500 calories to equal one pound of body weight. To reach my goal of losing 12 pounds:
3500 x 12 = 42,000 calories needed to burn divided by days to goal (89) = 472
This means, to reach my goal of 100 pounds by May 1st (89 days from now) I would have to have a daily calorie deficit of 472 calories. Now, lets factor in something else.....
Its called Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) - this is the amount of calories your body burns just by being alive! Yep, even if you layed in bed all day or sat down and didn't lift a single finger - you would burn calories. Now, in order to find out how many calories you burn by being alive - you need to find a calculator: http://www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/.
My BMR is 1311. Soo, now you take the calories you burn by being alive and subtract the calories deficit you need daily - and that's how many calories you can eat a day.
1311 - 472 = 839 allowed calorie intake daily to meet goal
Now I need to create a diet that has no more than 839 calories daily. That will be my next step. Another part of losing weight is working out. Dieting is the hardest part for me - working out is the easiest. Some people have it the other way around. But, if you want to have a smokin body you definitely have to do cardio AND strength training. Otherwise you will be skinny fat - and that's stupid.

Inspirational Sensational!!
If I could suggest one book to pick up right now and read front to back and follow like the bible, I would recommend The Success Principles by Jack Canfield - HANDS DOWN! He is the most amazing and inspirational writer - his writing speaks to my heart - like he wrote the book with me in mind. Haha!
I love self help books because you need to have that constant reminder to take care of your self and go after what you want. Here are some of his quotes....
People who ask confidently get more than those who are hesitant and uncertain. When you've figured out what you want to ask for, do it with certainty, boldness and confidence.
One of the things that may get in the way of people being lifelong learners is that they’re not in touch with their passion. If you’re passionate about what it is you do, then you’re going to be looking for everything you can to get better at it.
I teach something called The Law of Probabilities, which says the more things you try, the more likely one of them will work. The more books you read, the more likely one of them will have an answer to a question that could solve the major problems of your life.. make you wealthier, solve a health problem, whatever it might be.
You only have control over three things in your life -- the thoughts you think, the images you visualize, and the actions you take (your behavior). How you use these three things determines everything you experience. If you don't like what you are producing and experiencing, you have to change your responses.
One of the easiest ways to begin clarifying what you truly want is to make a list of 30 things you want to do, 30 things you want to have, and 30 things you want to be before you die.
Part of paying the price is the willingness to do whatever it takes to get the job done. It comes from a declaration that you are going to get it done no matter what it takes, no matter how long it takes, no matter what comes up.
